YMCA
generationconnect
McGurn YMCA is located in northeast Gainesville. The facility houses afterschool programs, summer day camp, aquatics, and facility rentals. The YMCA is dedicated to improving the spirt, mind and body of the community, including those who cannot afford its services. For those individuals and families, the YMCA calls on the community to help sponsor them.
The Generation Connection is a one-week day camp in which a diversity of age groups, particularly active seniors and young people ages 8 to 12, participate in a variety of structured activities. As young campers and older adults join in camp events together, connections are made between generations, backgrounds and cultures, and with the local environment. Seniors share their knowledge and experience, and young campers gain and provide new insights. A low senior to camper ratio (approximately 1:4) ensures lots of opportunities to communicate.

Kelly Jo Dowd, 42-year-old mother of Dakoda Dowd, the youngest golfer ever to play in the LPGA Open, relinquished her lengthy struggle against breast cancer Thursday evening, May 24, 2007.
Dowd, former Hooters Calendar Cover Girl and the only woman to climb the restaurant's corporate ladder from waitress to general manager, chose to go public with her cancer story to convince women everywhere to be vigilant about self-exams and screening. Dowd had ignored a lump in her breast for several months before her eventual diagnosis.
As a spokesperson for 'Charity for Women', she promoted self-breast examinations and the importance of yearly mammograms.  Hooters Restaurant's, where she worked as a general manager, formed the 'Kelly Jo Dowd breast cancer research fund' and produced educational videos, featuring Kelly Jo, to promote breast cancer awareness and early detection.
She and Dakoda collaborated with Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation in a fundraising endeavor, the KJ/Koda Fund, which enables other individuals losing their fight against terminal breast cancer, an opportunity to fulfill one final treasured wish.
